Rampage 5K Walk/Run

September 26th at 8:00 am Pleasant Grove Macey's

Farmer's Insurance and Macey's have teamed up with a few other local Companies to sponsor a first annual Mount Mahogany Rampage 5 K run/walk as part of Health and Safety week. This will be a great event for the entire family.

Macey's will have their famous pancake breakfast as part of the fundraiser following the race.

Farmer's insurance will have their M.I.L.K (Managing Information on Lost Kids) kits for your children. These kits are free to families. The M.I.L.K kits will register your child with the Amber Alert so that if the worst should happen, all you would have to do it push a button on your computer and it will automatically send all the necessary information [current photo, age, description, etc] to the local news and police stations, and the Amber Alert to help you recover your child as quickly as possible. Farmers will give you the CD kit so you can update it each year.

The Pleasant Grove Fire Department will bring their brand new Fire truck with the 100 ft. ladder. There will also be safety booths at the finish line.

If you would like to participate in the 5K, please register at the PG Macey's service desk
Registration fee: $15 Make your registration check out to Mount Mahogany PTA. If you register by Sept 21st, you will receive a Rampage T-shirt.

All funds will go to support the student at Mount Mahogany Elementary.

Spotlight: Mandi Lee Taylor

From time to time, we'll have a spotlight on someone in our community to tell us more about them and what they do. Here's our first!!!

My name is Mandi Lee Taylor. I have lived in the gateway village for about 5 years (I bought my condo before it was built!) and have loved it. I graduated from BYU in 2004 in early childhood education and taught first grade for five years. I also spent some time as a head teacher at the BYU child and family studies lab (aka Preschool).

During my first years of teaching I took a second job at a photo lab. I had always aspired to learn more about photography, and this was a great opportunity. I developed prints for a handful of professional photographers and became deeply interested in their work, I started to shadow them on shoots and assist them with lighting.

I had a son about a year ago and now stay home with him full time. This has given me a bit more time to develop my photography skills and expand my knowledge. I have taken several classes, and am still doing all I can to become better with each shoot. It has become a passion.
I think that we all have the ability to recognize beauty around us. The special thing about photography is that it freezes a moment of beauty and stores it away permanently. Photography gives me an opportunity to search for simple beauty and fresh perspectives, it has opened my mind to the detail of our world.
I offer sessions for all types of photography: newborns, children, families, couple, weddings.
Each session is 1-2 hours and is shot on location. I give my clients a high resolution CD with 50+ images (copyright released), so they can print and publish as they wish. Right now my pricing is INSANELY affordable.

For more information visit Leetaylorphotography.blogspot.com or email me at Leetaylorphoto@gmail.com! I would love to take pictures of you. . . .or teach you more about photography!

Thanks Mandi!

Missing Dog

This poor dog has been lost since Monday.
He's been hanging out by my place since yesterday.
I called Animal Control, who came by to catch him.
The catcher recognized the dog as having been reported lost.
She contacted the owner, who lives in the Pleasant Springs apartments,
They will continue to attempt to capture the dog.
The dog is sick (runny nose and wheezing) and
is overdue to take his medicine.

If you should see him let me know so I can let the owner where to go.
Thanks!

If you are interested, it's first come first served. Mention my name to Lani and I get a $10 credit toward my tuition.

FYI: The City of Orem requirements for in-home businesses allow a maximum of two round trips per hour to the residence. We ask students who are driven to the studio to carpool with others so that Island Style Dance will stay within this requirement. If you are unable to join a carpool, talk with Lani about your options. We go to the nearby park during Kai's lesson, so we park there and Kai walks.

Food Storage Low-Down

I attended the Enrichment presentation on food storage, given by Tammy Hulse, and Michelle asked me to take "copious notes" and we decided to post them on this blog. Well, after taking these so-called copious notes, I went home and checked out the instructor's website and of course her slide presentation is available there :) So I figured I would just give you the address to her website (the link to the slide presentation is on the left-hand side) so you could view the presentation in its entirety, and I am adding some things I personally found interesting about the whole presentation. Here goes . . .

* Tammy Hulse, the instructor, received her degree in Food, Science and Nutrition, which for me gives her some good credibility.

* Her website is www.homereliance.blogspot.com.

* The website has fantastic information in it (i.e. recipes, ideas, food preservation ideas) as well as links to valuable outside resources.

* I appreciated that she stressed to only build your food storage out of items your family will use, and to make them into your "convenience foods".

* She has an interesting way of using her food storage as "convenience food" and vise versa. She puts all the items needed to make a certain recipe in an old gift bag (for example, if the recipe calls for spices, she pre-measures them out and puts them in a Ziploc baggie and then places it in the gift bag, along with all other required items), with the recipe attached on the front. Then she just pulls out a bag when she needs to make dinner and everything she needs is inside. She has a 3-month-supply of these "meals-in-a-bag" and she replenishes each bag's food items after she uses them, thus maintaining her storage. I think these meals would significantly decrease the headaches we have when it is 5 o'clock and we are thinking "what should I make for dinner?"

* We tasted these foods at Enrichment and they were good. I am kind of picky with how my food tastes, and I liked these and would make them for my family.

* I think these meals-in-a-bag are a great idea for post-baby meals (so you can assemble them before the baby arrives). They also would be great for when younger kids are learning to make dinner. They take a lot of the complexity out of cooking.

* She showed us her bottled meats, which was pretty weird to me (looking-wise and thinking-wise) until I tasted them, and truly they taste a lot better than canned meats from the store. And the way she bottles beans is genius. Check it out on the blog.

* She stressed using a reference guide (links available on her blog) when canning, freezing, etc. This way your preserved food won't cause any unwanted illnesses :)

* She vacuum seals a lot of dry foods (chocolate chips, baking mixes, candy, nuts) in MASON JARS. I had never heard of that before, but it dramatically increases the shelf life of these items. Pretty cool.

This presentation was really interesting and eye-opening and I suggest checking out her blog if you want to learn and do more of these things. She has some great ideas!
