The Days of '47 Rodeo was voted one of the country's top rodeos by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA). Nationally-ranked cowboys and cowgirls compete and celebrate Utah's Pioneer Spirit Then & Now.

Discount tickets can be picked up at Wild About the West at Gardner Village but may only be redeemed at the E Center box office.

Island Style Dance will be having their annual recital. This is an opportunity for friends and family to see what the students have learned this year. Most of the students are also on the show team, which goes out and performs for a variety of wards and organizations, like Provo's New Years Eve party, First Night.

Although it is a recital, you get a quality show performance for free. Plus Kai, Coby and I will be performing :) We would love to see you there!

Statesmen Literature Discussions

We had a great discussion on "Common Sense". One question that was raised was "What can we do to effect change?" At times it can seem like we can't make a difference especially on the Federal level.

But we can make a difference. It starts in our own communities as we help lift each other and band together. And don't forget to vote today!!

Our next discussion will not be held till January 28th at 7:30. We will be discussing "The Crisis" by Thomas Paine...just the first one, but feel free to read them all.

Labor Day Weekend Events - Thanksgiving Point

Thanksgiving Point has an exciting new addition: the fascinating exhibit Mystery of Magnetism and the Mind.

Guests will experiment with a variety of exhibits designed to lead guests on an investigatory journey through magnets, perception, and simple motors.

Starting on Saturday Sept. 5th, the exhibit will be open Monday – Saturday, 10 am to 8 pm.
Admission is included with regular and combo Museum of Ancient Life passes {$10/Adult
$8/Child (3-12)} and is free for Thanksgiving Point and Museum of Ancient Life members.

Next Week
Plein Air painters and sculptors are invited to paint across Thanksgiving Point Tuesday, September 8 through Thursday, September 10, with demonstrations daily.

Events will culminate in an exhibition and sale of competition works at Water Tower Plaza on September 11 & 12. A highlight of this year's event is a Quick Draw (90 minute painting competition) at the Farmer's Market on Friday September 11 from 4:30 - 6:00

It's really neat to watch the artists as they work.

Statesmen Literature Discussions

Cove Fort Days

In June, on our way to Las Vegas, we stopped Cove Fort for a break. First, we watched a brief video on the history of the fort, then a Senior Missionary gave us a tour of the Fort, then of a replica of the Hinckley home in Colesville. The boys were given a souvenir: a wooden disc stamped Cove Fort 1867 with a braided cord that goes through two holes in the middle. It's a fun toy. It was a pleasant experience, and a nice break from our trip.Next Weekend the fort is having a two day celebration: Cove Fort Days!

Location

Cove Fort is located immediately northeast of the junction of I-15 and I-70, in the southeast corner of Millard County, twenty miles south of Kanosh and twenty-four miles north of Beaver. (Click here for a detailed map of Utah.)

Fort History

The fort was built to offer protection and refreshment to the traveler. Beginning in 1847, pioneers began settling the high mountain valleys stretching from Idaho to California. They came here to worship in peace and to build homes and communities. The fort is made of lava rock, which workers hauled from west of the property. The fort is 100 square feet, 18.5 feet tall, 4 feet thick at the footings and 2.5 feet thick at the top.

In 1867, the prophet Brigham Young called Ira Hinckley and his family to come and direct the building and operations of the fort.

Cove Fort has been restored to bring the past a little bit more to life. This is the only fort built by the Latter-day Saints in the 1800's that still stands.

I created a Google Calendar to post a variety of events in the Valley and beyond. Over there on the right hand side is a list of some of the upcoming events. I don't recommend clicking on the links, it messes things up. So I included a link to the Calendar itself in the Pleasant Grove section, so you can look over the events of the month in a more user friendly fashion.

I'm looking for a better gadget/html/whatever so it'll work better and not be so lame. I appreciate your patience and welcome any feedback you may have.

Museum Birthday Party

Join the Museum of Ancient Life as it celebrates its 9th Birthday, Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10. You’ll have a chance to explore the world’s largest dinosaur museum, make and take educational crafts, go on a fast-paced scavenger hunt, and have your face painted as part of this birthday celebration.

We went last year. It was loads of fun!

The boys just thought is was so great that the museum threw a birthday party!

The dino was made of balloons. How cool! Kai and Coby went digging for fossils (chips) in their segment of a pit (cookie). There was a station to make Plate-a-dactyl, and another to make pipe cleaner dinos, and a few games.

Hot Air Ballons

A few weeks ago, the boys and I watched some hot air balloon. We watched one as it deflated in our church parking lot. Then we caught sight of another as it cruised over Macey's. The boys watched in wonder as it floated towards the "G", prompting a lot of questions about how hot air balloons work, and why we only see them in the morning.
