Antique Doll Collection

Shirley Paxman founded the McCurdy Doll Museum in 1978 in Provo, UT and named it for Laura Christensen McCurdy who provided more than 3,000 dolls. McCurdy, who was a teacher, collected and used the original dolls in her instructional programs. The museum’s dolls are grouped in such historical themes as women of the Bible, folk dresses of the world, Native American dolls, and first ladies of America. The museum was located in a restored 1893 carriage house until 2005. The museum closed that year and the dolls have not been seen publically since that time. For the first time in four years, a special selection of dolls will be on display at the Woodbury Art Museum (UVU School of the Arts).

The dolls in this exhibition represent a small selection of the works created by Lewis Sorensen. Born in 1910, Sorensen became one of America's premier creators of wax dolls – both life size figures and smaller doll size sculptures. The subject of numerous newspaper articles, Sorensen gained a broad reputation for his life-size wax figures, and a general reputation as an outstanding sculptor. Appearing in this exhibit is a series of 12 “Father Christmas” dolls commissioned by Paxman representing traditions from a variety of nations. Sorensen developed a unique wax technique that he developed that is soft enough to carve, but firm enough to resist melting. The life-like, and individual characters of each ornately clothed figure adds charm to the stories of their origin.

National Invitational Postcard Exhibition

Woodbury Art Museum

Through a network of artists, an artist from each of the fifty states was invited to make a postcard size (5" x 7") image dealing in some respect with the place in which they live. The curator of the exhibit is Jeanne Voltura, Director of the Bridge Gallery, City of Las Vegas, NV.

The art pieces represent visual contexts and environments with diverse impetus and purpose. While the concept of postcard art is not new, this iteration of such an event presents serious works of art on a miniature scale, as opposed to simply images that has transited the country through the US mail. Many of the works on paper are two sided - and are installed in such a manner as to permit the patron to examine both surfaces.

The exhibition was exhibited at the Bridge Gallery from April - July of 2009. It is also traveling to these other venues as of this time: Woodbury Art Museum, Utah Valley University School of the Arts, Orem, UT; McCutchan Art Center, University of Southern Indiana; A.D. Gallery, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Pembroke, NC; USCB Gallery, University of South Carolina, Beaufort SC. Other venues are under consideration.

Have a very unique Christmas Adventure! Fun for the whole Family! Enjoy a lighted riverboat ride on the lower Provo River. It is like a hayride, but a boat ride. There are thousands of lights reflecting off the water, Holiday scenes along the shore, and Christmas music on the boat. Santa even comes to visit on his canoe. Last year close to 2,000 people enjoyed our Christmas Cruise during the month of December. We have two professional excursion boats that can accommodate 40 people per ride. Since the boats are uncovered, blankets and warm clothes are strongly encouraged. The ride is a round trip experience that takes 25 minutes, with departures every 30 minutes, on the hour and half-hour.

This new exhibit celebrates one of the most captivating and charismatic species on the planet, and will feature several species of live seahorses and their relatives, including the unique and fascinating pipefish. The exhibit will also include an interactive reproductive component that will educate visitors about the unique reproduction of seahorses. Seahorses lock tails, change colors, swim snout-to-snout and whirl around in unison for days before engaging in a “true courtship dance” that lasts about eight hours. When one thing finally leads to another, it is the male of the species that becomes pregnant and carries the offspring.

Library Class Registration

Monday, December 14th -Registration begins for these children's classes:

Story Time

Story time is a six-week program for children three to six years old and consists of approximately 40 minutes of stories, songs, fingerplays, and crafts. The registration fee is $5.00 with a current library card.

Wee Read

Wee Read is a class for little ones, eighteen months to three years.

Registration for this free program is a must because of limited space.

Music and Movement

Music and Movement features rhythm, chanting, singing, and movement. This popular class fills quickly, so sign up soon. This class is designed for children 3 and 1/2 to 6 years old. All participants need to be potty trained.

Class size is limited to 12 students. This class lasts approximately 35 minutes each session, with 6 total sessions.
The class fee is $5.00 with a current library card.

Join us for 2009 Holiday Lights, a candy land of color, lights, and cheer this Christmas season. With more than a mile of winding path through one million twinkling lights, giant animated holiday displays and illuminated trees, Holiday Lights is better than ever, blending the favorites of the past and the excitement of new displays. The Christmas Story, as illustrated by Simon Dewey, completes the experience with a beautiful and meaningful nativity.

Voice Male Thanksgiving Point Show Barn

Voice Male is made up of six very different individuals who came together and have been performing a cappella for over 14 years. They have released 9 cd’s, including the ever popular Jingles and Jingles 2. The year’s tour is sure to please with many of the old familiar Christmas tunes you grew up with, as well as a few extra treats! There's never a dull moment when Voice Male takes the stage with their unique a cappella sound. And yes...everything you'll hear is generated by just their voices.
