Carillon Concert

The BYU Centennial Carillon Tower has now stood for thirty years as a symbol of freedom and spirit.  The annual Freedom Festival Carillon Concert awakens emotions of patriotism and liberty through performances that appeal to children and adults alike.

BYU University Carillonneur Don Cook will perform patriotic pieces, as well as folk, Broadway, classical, and original compositions for an eager audience. Hundreds will bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics to the shady lawns surrounding the tower to enjoy an evening concert.  This is one of the more simple and leisurely events of the Festival.

The tower stands 97 feet tall and contains 52 cast bronze bells.  The smallest bell weights 21 pounds with the largest at 4,730 pounds.  The keyboard consists of broomstick-like manual keys and short pedal keys that are played with the side of the closed hands and with the feet.  Each bell plays until the tone fades away naturally, allowing new tones and fading tones to resonate with one another.  Don Cook studied carillon at the University of Kansas until he returned to BYU in 1991 where he has participated in the concert yearly.

The fun gets started with check-in, welcome, introductions, games and a BBQ.  Then we’ll start right in with choreography and music workshops from festival director Shawn Mortensen and begin learning an ensemble music revue.  The day will end with everyone heading to the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre to relax and enjoy a local vocal competition and a big-screen outdoor movie showing of “The Goonies.”

Enjoy a workshop on better auditions by Rodger Sorensen;  and more choreography, music and performance rehearsals.  That evening, we’ll return to the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre to watch SCERA’s production of the musical classic Singin’ in the Rain.

The morning starts off with more choreography and music and putting the finish touches on our ensemble performance,  And then comes the highlight of the festival: a one-of-a-kind workshop with LA-based choreographer Linda Love-Simmons.  That evening, all participants will perform their music revue as a pre-show to a large audience at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre.  Then it’s off to a parking lot dance and pizza party to celebrate!

Flag Day Celebration Breakfast

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Honor Flag Day by participating in the annual Flag Retirement Ceremony.  

Tuesday, June 14th

The event respectfully retires flags that have become so tattered worn that they no longer properly represent the great sacrifices and values of the United States. According to the U.S. Flag Code, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning” (4 USC 8K).

The ceremony begins promptly at 7:30 with a patriotic speaker followed by the dignified retirement of worn and tattered flags that have served our country well but are no longer fit for display.

Boy Scout Troop 999 will serve as hosts, welcoming all Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venture Scouts, and Girl Scouts over age 12 in full uniform to participate (please arrive at least 1 hour early). 

Provo City will bring in several bleachers and those attending are also welcome to bring their own chairs. This is a great family event that teaches patriotism and love for the flag.

Retired flags can be brought to the event or drop them off at Macey’s Food & Drug, prior to the ceremony.

All roles are available and there are a wide variety of ages and diversity in the cast.  We are looking for strong ethnic as well as caucasian actors/singers/dancers.  No appointment is necessary to audition.  SCERA will provide CD or IPOD playback or a piano is available if you bring your own accompanist. Bingham Canyon Mine Visitor's Center

Standing at the overlook within the Bingham Canyon Mine, you can see, hear, and feel the breathtaking and awesome magnitude of the of more than 100 years of work.

From the overlook, you can watch 240 and 320 ton capacity haulage trucks deliver copper ore to the in-pit crusher, where the material is reduced to the size of soccer balls before being loaded onto a five-mile conveyor that carries the ore to the Copperton Concentrator. 

Inside the Visitors Center, you and your family will take part in interactive displays and exhibits – including 3-D microscopes to examine rock and mineral samples, and displays showing how copper is used in your everyday life. You will also see exhibits ranging from old mining artifacts and model trucks to modern-day operations and environmental engineering as well as three-dimensional models that provide an educational and entertaining experience for people of all ages. 

Finish your tour with a dramatic 16-minute video tour — in our 90-seat theater — of our history, present day operations, and future.  

No reservations are necessary

Children's Discovery Garden at Thanksgiving Point

The Children’s Discovery Gardens are transformed into a princess playland where pre-registered girls may visit princess stations throughout the Garden for photo ops, mini-performances, glass slipper fittings and more!

Your little Princess will have the opportunity to join in six different short adventures at your own pace and choosing, each 15 minutes long for a total of 1.5 hours

We are still finalizing the details of the adventures, but this year we are planning to bring you:

Based on the 1952 MGM film, this romantic musical comedy is set in 1920’s Hollywood, when movie studios were struggling with the transition from silent pictures to “talkies.” A silent–era matinee idol, Don Lockwood, meets a struggling young movie extra, Kathy Selden - and a romance develops, irritating Don’s screechy voiced co–star, Lina Lamont.  This lighthearted classic is filled with zany fun, incredible dance numbers and songs including Good Mornin’, All I Do Is Dream of You, Make ‘Em Laugh and more.  Directed by Jerry Elison.  Music Direction by Martha Glissmeyer.  Choreography by Sunny Watts. A Book of Mormon Fiesta: A Latin–American Celebration

The exhibit will celebrate the rich Latin heritage within the Church by focusing on gospel truths, while highlighting both ancient and modern-day stories of faithful Latin American Saints. It is divided into three interactive sections: "Learn Truths," "Share Truths," and "Live Truths," in which children and adults alike can learn and apply the inspiring stories of Latin American Saints. Hands-on activities for children, dressing-up in authentic Latin American clothing, and dancing is also included in the exhibit. The exhibit begins by going through the Book of Mormon story, and then making it come to life with modern-day stories and activities.
