PTA Reflections Program
From each of the boys, I received this little pink slip titled Reflections Theme 2009-2010: "Beauty is. . ." Uh, what's that? I got that it was some sort of arts contest, but what was the point. So I looked it up at www.ptareflections.org:
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.
Oh, ok! On with the details of the contest. There is no cost to enter. Students, kindergarten to sixth grade, may submit works in each of these arts areas: (read the requirements over carefully for the category that your child wishes to enter as they may be turned back for not following entry directions)
Dance choreography
Film production
Literature
Musical composition
Photography
Visual arts
Theatre Arts &
3-D arts (sculpture, jewelry, mobiles, etc)
As with any student activity, parent involvement and support are very important. But parents must remember that student artists need to be responsible for their own work. Children must make their own decisions about what to create and what to enter in the Reflections Program . . . Students should simply do their best; crooked lines, incorrect musical notes, or misspelled words do not disqualify anyone. ~http://www.ptareflections.org/cs/about_reflections
Entry forms will be available in the Mount Mahogany office on Thursday, October 1st.
All entries are due Thursday, October 22nd.
Winners will be announced at the November Student of the Month Assembly (during the school day)

Health And Safety Week
Starting on Monday, September 21 is Health and Safety Week at Mount Mahogany.
Each day has a theme and a fun way for the kids to participate.
Monday:
Everyone is Different! It is great to be me and you to be you. Come to school with Crazy Hair.
Tuesday:
Exercise to have fun and be healthy. Wear your sweats, favorite sports jersey or uniform day.
Wednesday:
Use your head! Wear your helmet to school
Thursday:
Walk away from danger (internet or stranger). Crazy socks or mismatched shoes will help you on your way.
Picture Day is also on Thursday. If you are looking for an alternative to the traditional school pictures, check out Brekke's website: Day Dreamers Photograpy. Although, I think she's going to post more about it on here.
Friday:
Be healthy from the inside out! Wear your clothes inside out.
Saturday:
Don't forget to support the Mt Mahogany Rampage 5K. (a map of the course)
Rampage Pancake Breakfast in front of Macey's, $2 per person.
Emergency Preparedness Snack
On Tuesday, don't forget to send in an Emergency Preparedness Snack to school for your child. This snack will be stored at school all year long in case an emergency situation was to occur during school hours. Write your child's name on a ziplock baggie and place a granola bar/crackers and juice/water inside. Make sure the snack is well packaged and won't get stale.
Internet Safety Seminar
Thursday, September 24th at 7:00 pm in the school gym.
Learn the best methods for keeping your children safe on the internet!
The goal of this parent-only educational meeting is to teach parents of all technical skills levels how to keep kids safe on the internet. More importantly, we will discuss how to help kids grow up in an environment where the internet is all-pervasive.
Every participant will learn how to access free software to help you immediately implement these ideas in your home . When you leave this seminar, you will have the tools and knowledge you need to keep your kids safe on the internet.
Some of the items that will be discussed include:
* dangers of the internet - instant messaging, chatting, social networking sites, pornography, cyber-bullying, and more
* teaching children to be safe on the internet, setting internet, usage rules for your home and outside your home
* using internet filter to protect children, including amazing new filters just released in the last few months.
If you have any questions, please call Sam Farnsworth, the Utah PTA technology advisor at (801)830-3112.

I went years ago while attending the Y. I'm not sure how my friends convinced me to go, cuz honestly I'm a HUGE wimp when it comes to scary stuff. PTA's new website

This year the PTA has launched an all new interactive website, justbetweenfriends.com (JBF).
All parents, whether PTA members or not, are encouraged to sign up. The ease of communication allowed by this website will be a valuable tool to make this school year the best ever. Visit the website and enter the token to get started.

Family History Courses
Want to get started on your family history but aren't sure how?
Well, BYU's Independent Study offers free online courses.
1. Finding your Ancestors - this course will instruct you on how to
- use Family Search
- record information in a Personal Ancestry File (PAF)
- prepare a GEDCOM file to submit names to the temple
*To be able to view what work has already been done for your ancestor, you will need to get your member number and confirmation date from our ward clerk - Justin Martin
2. Intro to Family History Research - how to start from the very beginning.
3. Providing temple ordinances for your ancestors - a course that goes more in-depth on how to submit names to the temple.
4. Helping Children love your Family History - great ways to get kids excited about family history.

A Light at the End of the Hard Water Tunnel
I love dishwashers. You put dirty dishes in, add some detergent, push a few buttons, and--voila!--clean dishes! But there is nothing more frustrating than putting dirty dishes in, adding some detergent, pushing a few buttons, and being rewarded with dishes that are still, curiously, dirty. Our dishwasher hasn't been getting our dishes clean for a while now. After weeks of running each load twice or having to sort through the "clean" load to pick out the few items that actually appeared to be clean, I started trying every remedy I could think of. I ran vinegar through a couple cycles, changed detergent, and ran a cycle with a specially formatted dishwasher disinfectant and cleaner. But still no clean dishes. They weren't horribly dirty. They were just coated in a white film and all the glassware looked cloudy. Not very appetizing. I finally realized that this could be due to hard water. Don't laugh. I didn't grow up with hard water, so I've never really had to deal with it before. From what I hear, though, most of us in this area are dealing with it on a daily basis.
With this new hypothesis, I went to Smith's and scanned the dishwashing aisle one last time. Figuring it couldn't hurt, I brought home a container of Lemi Shine (www.lemishine.com). It claimed to be a champ at battling hard water. And let me tell you, it is. I ran my first load with it last night and practically cried tears of joy at the miracle before me when I opened the dishwasher door at the end of the cycle. Clean dishes! I'd forgotten the sparkle and shine of truly clean dishes! Hooray!
This fantastic product is also totally natural--not a phosphate in sight. I found it at Smith's, but I'm sure other local retailers carry it. It is a bit pricey. I think the 12 oz. container I bought ran me a little over $4 and it will last about 18 loads. However, on www.lemishine.com, they sell a 5 gallon bucket that brings the cost down to about $2.50 per 12 ozs. For regular use, you only fill up your main detergent receptacle with it and use regular detergent in the other.
