PTA Reflections Program
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.
Oh, ok! On with the details of the contest. There is no cost to enter. Students, kindergarten to sixth grade, may submit works in each of these arts areas: (read the requirements over carefully for the category that your child wishes to enter as they may be turned back for not following entry directions)
Dance choreography
Film production
Literature
Musical composition
Photography
Visual arts
Theatre Arts &
3-D arts (sculpture, jewelry, mobiles, etc)
As with any student activity, parent involvement and support are very important. But parents must remember that student artists need to be responsible for their own work. Children must make their own decisions about what to create and what to enter in the Reflections Program . . . Students should simply do their best; crooked lines, incorrect musical notes, or misspelled words do not disqualify anyone. ~http://www.ptareflections.org/cs/about_reflections
Entry forms will be available in the Mount Mahogany office on Thursday, October 1st.
All entries are due Thursday, October 22nd.
Winners will be announced at the November Student of the Month Assembly (during the school day)
Contact Wendy Cook (wmcook11@msn.com or 796-8974) if you have any questions or if you would like to judge Music, Film & Video, or Theatre Arts this year.

Internet Safety Seminar
Thursday, September 24th at 7:00 pm in the school gym.
Learn the best methods for keeping your children safe on the internet!
The goal of this parent-only educational meeting is to teach parents of all technical skills levels how to keep kids safe on the internet. More importantly, we will discuss how to help kids grow up in an environment where the internet is all-pervasive.
Every participant will learn how to access free software to help you immediately implement these ideas in your home . When you leave this seminar, you will have the tools and knowledge you need to keep your kids safe on the internet.
Some of the items that will be discussed include:
* dangers of the internet - instant messaging, chatting, social networking sites, pornography, cyber-bullying, and more
* teaching children to be safe on the internet, setting internet, usage rules for your home and outside your home
* using internet filter to protect children, including amazing new filters just released in the last few months.

I went years ago while attending the Y. I'm not sure how my friends convinced me to go, cuz honestly I'm a HUGE wimp when it comes to scary stuff. I've never been so freaked out scared in all my life. Although, it was also quite the rush, once was enough. Those of you made of sterner stuff, I hope you enjoy it!
PTA's new website
This year the PTA has launched an all new interactive website, justbetweenfriends.com (JBF).
All parents, whether PTA members or not, are encouraged to sign up. The ease of communication allowed by this website will be a valuable tool to make this school year the best ever. Visit the website and enter the token to get started.
Where JBF is a newly developed website we ask for your patience as we are still learning the system. Please report any problems to Kate Merrill's email address. Thank you.
If you did not receive the token or Kate's email address, leave a comment and I'll get you the info.
A group is available for each class, when you sign up for a group you will able to receive and send announcements. As a Parent Volunteer you can ask for volunteers.
The PTA will be using this a lot as they will be going paperless.

A Light at the End of the Hard Water Tunnel
With this new hypothesis, I went to Smith's and scanned the dishwashing aisle one last time. Figuring it couldn't hurt, I brought home a container of Lemi Shine (www.lemishine.com). It claimed to be a champ at battling hard water. And let me tell you, it is. I ran my first load with it last night and practically cried tears of joy at the miracle before me when I opened the dishwasher door at the end of the cycle. Clean dishes! I'd forgotten the sparkle and shine of truly clean dishes! Hooray!

Happy dish washing!

Found Dog

Friday night a gentleman found a little white dog in the LDS church parking lot. Long story short we ended up with him. Please call Janae or Jared at 801-785-9859 if he is yours.
Spotlight: Raven Haymond

I am the mother of two young children who fill my days with hugs, snuggles, and various cereal products. We've lived in Pleasant Grove for two years and I love the fact that there are fields right across from our building and horses just a short walk away. On the musical side, I play the violin. I am currently taking fiddling lessons and am also a member of the Pleasant Grove Orchestra. My addiction to good books came in handy when I studied English for my B.A. and my M.A. and my husband's talent as a ballroom dancer led me to write a thesis on ballroom dance culture in Utah. I've just started a training program with the hopes of running a 5-K sometime this fall. I never thought I'd be any sort of runner. Finally, I am a dark chocolate person.
Why mini cakes? My mother teaches art classes out of her home in North Carolina and happened to be having classes one week when I was visiting them this past year. Since I had taken some cake decorating classes, she asked me to teach some basic techniques to her students. I knew that I wanted each child to have their own cake to decorate, but time, space, and budget didn't allow for dozens of full-sized cakes. I was standing at her kitchen counter one day mulling this over when I had the miniature cookie cake idea. We could take 4-5 cookies, stack them, fill and frost them with buttercream, and each child would have their own, proportionate, miniature cake. The cakes were a hit with the kids who enjoyed building them and decorating them with simple piping details. The took home miniature cakes and I brought the idea back to Utah, wondering if I could sell these miniature cakes. I decided to just give it a try and that's how Dollhouse Cakes was born.
For full details, you can visit www.dollhousecakes.com . Basically, I make customized miniature cookies cakes. The customer chooses the flavor of the cookies and the flavor of the frosting from my menu of choices and together we design their cakes. I have various levels of decoration to suit different tastes and budgets and you choose the number of cakes you want. One cake makes a sweet treat for one person and a dozen cakes can give each birthday party guest there very own miniature cake. Each slice looks just like a miniature layered cake and the flavor combinations are pretty delicious. They are fun and different way to celebrate any occasion.
As a mother, I've found it important to have some kind of creative outlet that allows me to work and express myself apart from my children. Having various activities like playing the violin and making these cakes refreshes me and reminds me of the person I am outside of my mothering responsibilities. At the same time, I prefer these activities to work around my mommy schedule, not against it. Starting up Dollhouse Cakes has been a blast. Working with my husband to design the website and baking trial cakes was exciting and invigorating. It's fun now to receive actual orders and know that someone out there actual likes the miniature cakes. It's nice, as a mother, to have that concrete validation and I think it's good for my kids to see that life is about taking chances, creating, and trying new things. I guess it's just nice to have something that is completely mine and that gives me a space to be creative. It doesn't hurt that I'm creating with buttercream and cookies that always need taste testing.
Box Tops & money for schools
Even though it's only 10 cents a Box Top, it adds up to make a huge difference for the students. Box Top earnings can go towards upgrading technology, purchasing of much needed school equipment and supplies, introducing accelerated math and reading programs, aiding the school chorus, and helping the PTA fund various school programs and activities for the children, including rewards and incentives for students and teachers.
Last year, Mount Mahogany was able to earn $1376. Their goal this year is to earn $1,651.
Mount Mahogany Elementary or Pleasant Grove Junior High School could earn up to $40,000, just by asking family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to cut out the Box Top labels on any number of items and brands (General Mills, Betty Crocker, Toaster Strudels, Kleenex, Huggies, Pillsbury, etc. . )
If you would like to help, start collecting your Box Tops. Send them to school with your kids or your neighbors' kids. Once a week Mount Mahogany does a prize drawing. I believe it's on Fridays. This week Coby will be turning in 30 Box Tops. That's $3 for the school. Woo hoo!

The Montessori Method of education is a model which serves the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs of children of all levels of mental and physical ability as they live and learn in a natural, mixed-age group which is very much like the society they will live in as adults.
Maria Montessori believed that children could learn a great deal more than expected if the learning environment were properly prepared for their needs and interests. Through her work she developed a method which is now referred to as the Montessori Method. The Montessori method is an integrated approach to education that takes into account individual variations in a child's development and focuses on educating the whole child.

Hobo Spiders and Spraying your units
They normally charge $85 to come out and spray, but they have blocked off a couple hours for us and will do anyone who is interested in having their unit's sprayed for $50 each tomorrow morning. Townhomes and ground level condos are the ones I would reccomend this service for the most. Hobo's can be dangerous as are Black Widows and it is getting to mating season for them so now is a good time to spray.
If you want your unit sprayed, please call me at 801-357-9470 and let me know and I will have them come do yours in the morning also. Payment to them will be do at the time of spraying.
Thanks so much!
Brekke Felt
Megan Martin also let me know that the company the HOA has contracted is spraying today and tomorrow also and they will do the inside of your unit for $25. I do not know the company or anything about what they spray. I will let you know when I get that information.
This is exactly what the spider I have dead in a jar in my garage looks like. The one we found is about the size of a black widow.
